Here is list of risks which Internet offers your kids. Beware of them!

Risks on Internet
The Internet has drastically changed the way that children interact with the world. They have easy access to in-depth knowledge, yet along with offering a fascinating, new way to connect with the world, the Internet also offers new risks. Check out this list:
  • Cyberbullying – Netiquette refers to good manners on the internet and treating other people on the internet as you would like to be treated yourself. Children may not realize that they can accidentally offend someone online. Unfortunately, some people use the internet and/or mobile phones to upset or harass others. This is called “Cyberbullying”.
  • Exposure to inappropriate material – Parents should be aware of children/adolescent’s exposure to inappropriate material—sexually explicit, violent, or threatening text, pictures, videos, or phone calls—through their mobile phones.
  • Revealing too much personal information – Children can become become easy target for online predetors. These people ask them about their personal information, such as home addresses and phone numbers, private thoughts and feelings, and pictures. Children are so innocent that they end up telling such personal information to strangers.
  • Virus and Spam – Virus is a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Computers attached to internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up into crashing your whole hard disk. Spyware is software that keeps a watch on user’s Internet activities. This can include personal information entered such as credit card and banking numbers as well as web site visits. The information is gathered and transmitted over the Internet to a receiving source. This happens without the user knowledge as it uses their computer’s resources for its own purpose.
Make sure that your child and family knows how to stay safe online and are wise netizens.

Genuine or Scam? Make sure your child understands to identify it correctly

make your child cybersmart , visit www.wisenetizen.com today!
Parents need to teach his child to spot a fake account/ email/ link.
Start it by searching a fake account and then discuss it with your child.Guide him on how he can identify a fake account.
A) Here are some key features of a fake profile on a website.
– The profile is almost empty
When it comes to any kind of social networking website, usually real person always takes the time to fill out their online profile. Even if they were to put it off the first day they joined, a real person would go back later to fill out any information they have missed. You can keep this in mind when you accept a friend request.
– Occupation is modeling
It seems that most people who are representing fake identities always choose the modeling occupation.
– Has only one picture
If they represent themselves using just one picture more than likely it can be a fake profile
– Profile has links to adult websites
If you are talking to fake profile, you will notice that they have an URL in their profile that links to an adult related website.
– Create Drama
They try to get sympathy, create drama, talk how life is cruel with them, etc
B) Steps to keep in mind to identify fake email or URL
– Incorrect URL
Hackers use fake sites to steal your information. Watch to make sure the URL is actually the one you want to be going to— if you notice the URL is different, that’s a good indication that the site is fake and you should NOT enter your information. There’s a number of ways you can protect yourself from this:
– Sender’s Email Address
You can also check who sent the email by looking at the send address. It may say it’s from your friend, but the email id is something which you have never heard of.
– Typos
Misspellings or grammatical errors are another sure sign that the message or site is fake.
– Request for personal information
Fake emails often ask you to reply to the message with confidential information. One tactic that is commonly used by hackers is to alert you that you must provide and/or update your personal information about an account (e.g., Social Security number, bank account details, account password). Phishers will use this tactic to drive urgency for someone to click on a malicious URL or download an attachment aiming to infect the user’s computer or steal their information.
– Suspicious attachments
Is this new email in your inbox the first time your bank has sent you an attachment? The majority of financial institutions or retailers will not send out attachments via email, so be careful about opening any from senders or messages that seem suspicious. High risk attachments file types include: .exe, .scr, .zip, .com, .bat.

Tips for keeping your kids safe on Instagram

These days, Instagram photos are cropping up all over Facebook and Twitter feeds. In short span of time, Instagram has become a very popular photo and video sharing service.
Few things you need to keep in mind when your child wants to start using Instagram are:
-Location Settings
Turn off the Geo-tagging or Location of photos, that way even if a photo gets out to the public, hopefully no one knows where your child is.
-Accepting Followers
If they don’t know who the person is in real life, then they shouldn’t accept them as a follower.
-Establishing rules
Establish clear rules from the beginning and state clearly that if your child does not follow them, you will ban them from using the app. If your child has a smartphone, limit access to Instagram only when he or she has WiFi, unless you have an unlimited data plan. Pictures and now videos can end up using lots of megabytes.
- Monitoring the account
Monitor their account, either by following them on Instagram or checking their mobile phone, tablet or iPod.
-Privacy Settings
By default, all Instagram accounts are public regardless of age. You have to manually make it private, and then only approved followers can see your child’s pictures.  You can set each photo to the privacy control that you are comfortable with by choosing Profile and then turning on ‘Photos are Private’.
-Leave out the phone number
If your child gives their phone number at registration, it becomes part of their public profile. Phone number is optional, so don’t enter it.
Continue to talk to your children about what they are posting and what they are allowed to post. Encourage them to talk to their friends about appropriate posting and their own privacy settings.
